For the past 6 months, I have been a passive reader of a few famous food-blog like Tiffinbiru, Citarasawan & others and it has re-ignite my passion for baking :). The last time I baked for the family was before I got married, which is like 5 years ago. Then late March this year I felt the urge to bake something..anything. So I baked my first chocolate cookies after 5 years hiatus. It was a disaster. Not only it took me more than an hour to have the cookie batter ready but I managed to mess up the simplest recipe.
Okay let's start with how I measure the ingredients.
When the recipe states "1 cup of flour/sugar" I used a tea cup to measure my dry ingredients like flour & sugar. Then the recipe went on to say "3/4 cup of butter" I used the same tea cup and tried my best to stuff the tea cup with butter, obviously 3/4 of the tea cup. It was a messy business. Butter & flour everywhere :). Then the recipe requires "1 tea spoon of vanilla extract" so I used my small fancy teaspoon to measure the vanilla. I thought to myself, I am doing great! So I just mix the ingredients just like the recipe says. Baked it as instructed in my unused-for-5-years oven. Had to clean it up a bit as it has become home to few spidey. Nak dipendekkan cerita the cookies came out flat and tough as brick. It demotivates me a little. I thought I can just pick up where I left off 5 years ago. But no.. memang betul apa orang cakap " Practice makes perfect" So I was determined to keep on practicing till I get it right. Semangat betul kan! But I was determined.
So I tried making a few other types of easier cookies like biskut arab and almond cookies and it came out alright. But I am still learning and have a long way to go before I can sell any of my cookies.
So the main thing here is to not give up when you failed. One day you will finally get it right, and the feeling of success is so sweet.
